T: Good morning, boys and girls.
Ss: Good morning , teacher
T: It is well-known that there are many famous rivers in China. Now let’s play a game. Do you know their names? I will give you some key words and pictures about each river. When I give the first information , if your answer is right, your group will get 3 points. When I give the second information, if your answer is right, your group will get 2 points. When I give the last information , if your answer is right, your group will just get 1 point. Have you got the rule of the game?
Ss: Yes.
T: If you know the answer , please stand up as soon as possible. Ok?

S: Yellow River.
T: You are right! This river is called our mother river.. Which group are you in?

S: It is the Mekong River.

T: Last Friday I asked each group to refer to some information about The Mekong River. Now it is time for you to share.
S1: The Mekong River begins in a glacier on a Tibetan mountain.
S2: The source is located in the Jifu Mountain in Zaduo County of Qinghai Province, which is 5,200 meters above sea level.
S3: The length of it is 4909 km.
S4: In China , it is called the Lancang River. Out of China , it is called the Mekong River.
S5: The river delta enters the South China Sea.
S6: The Mekong River flows through many countries.

T: Wonderful! You all did a good job! Just now you mentioned that The Mekong River flows through many countries. Now I show you a map. Could you please list the countries Mekong River passes through?
Ss: Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam.
T: Very good . You also do well in geography. Today we will learn a text named Journey down the Mekong.

T: I will give you one minute to predict what the text is mainly about.

S: The text is talking about the dream of Wang Kun and Wang Wei and their preparation for the trip.
T: Excellent! How can we get it ? I will introduce you a reading strategy: From the title, headline and illustration , we can make a prediction.

Step 5: Careful Reading (12 minutes)
T: It is time for us to Read the text carefully to get the detailed information. Firstly, let’s look at the first paragraph. There are two tasks for you. First one, answer the three questions. Second one, find detailed information according to the timeline. Read the first paragraph, please. Two minutes.
T: Time is up . Question one: Who will travel in the text?
Ss: Wang kun and Wang wei.
T: Just two person? Anybody else?
Ss: Dao wei and Yu hang.
T: Yes. Four person. Question two: Where are they going ?
S: Along the Mekong river .
T: Exactly, along the Mekong river from where it begins to where it ends. Question three: How are they getting there?
Ss: By bike.
T: Right. They will cycle there. Next , let’s look at how their dream come true. Who want to try?
S1: Since middle school, My sister Wang Wei and Wang kun have dreamt about taking a great bike trip.
S2: Two years ago, Wang wei bought a mountain bike. Then she persuaded Wang kun to buy one.
S3:Last year, Wang wei visited her cousins who are Dai and grew up in Yunnan Province near the Lancang River.
S4:When they graduated from college, they finally got the chance to take a bike trip.
S5:Now , Wang we is planning their schedule for the trip.
T: You all did a good job. Next, I give you 2 minutes to read the second paragraph, then finish the tasks . Task1 :What different opinions do they have about the trip? Task2:Could you use some words or phrases to describe the characters of Wang wei and Wang kun?
T: Time is up. Firstly , let’s look at their attitudes .
S1:About source, Wang kun thought it would be too far. For Wang wei, she had a determined look .Nothing wouldn’t change her mind.
T: Good.
S2:Wang kun thought the altitude would be too high. While Wang wei seemed to be excited about it.
T: Wonderful.
S3:In Wang kun’s opinion , the air would be hard to breathe and it is very cold, but Wang wei said it would be an interesting experience.
T: Great. From their different attitudes toward to the trip, could you use some words or phrases to describe the characters of Wang wei and Wang kun?
S1: I think Wang wei is a stubborn and determined girl. Once she made up her mind , nothing wouldn’t change her mind .
T: Do you agree with her?
Ss: Yes
T: Anything else? Although it would be far and high , even the air would be hard to breathe, Wang wei still insisted on doing it . What is her character from that? She is a adventurous girl, right?
Ss: Yes.
S2:In my opinion, Wang kun is careful and clever girl.
T : I agree with you.
T: At last , let’s read the last paragraph in order to know The Mekong River better . Two minutes later , let’s do an exercise.

Ss: The Mekong River begins in glacier on a Tibetan mountain. At first the river is small and the water is clean and cold.
Ss: It becomes rapids as it passes through deep valleys, traveling across western Yunnan Province.
Ss: Sometimes the river becomes a waterfall and enters wide valleys.
Ss:After it leaves China and high altitude, the Mekong becomes wide, brown and warm. As it enters Southeast Asia, its pace slows.
Ss:It makes wide bends or meanders through low valleys to the plains where rice grows. At last, the river delta enters the South China Sea.
T: From these information ,we know about the Mekong better.
Step 6: Challenge
T: Now let’s look at your learning plan. There is an exercise an exercise about grammar linked to Gaokao. It is also a summary about the text. I asked you to finish it on weekend. Now who want to write your answers on the screen? Ok, that girl please. Pay attention to using the proper form.
